The Odisha government has introduced the Odisha Balaram Yojana 2024 to extend financial support to landless farmers who are currently unemployed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative aims to provide rural loans totaling Rs 1,040 crore to approximately 7 lakh landless farmers over the next seven years. As part of the implementation strategy, Asit Kumar Tripathi, the chief secretary, has directed the use of Joint Liability Groups (JLG) to facilitate agricultural loans for landless farmers. The execution of the plan will be overseen at the state level by IMAGE, with regional plans being devised by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA). Saurabh Garg, the secretary for horticulture, highlighted that the Landless Defenders will access credit through JLG with the added benefit of social insurance coverage.
